Before Amazon’s drones take flight, MassDOT wants its say
The agency says Amazon must obtain approval from its Aeronautics Division before launching deliveries from Westborough. Massachusetts transportation officials have warned Amazon's proposed drone deliveries in Westborough, Massachusetts, that it still requires state approvals before any drone takes off. The Massachusetts Aeronautics Division has oversight authority over the operation and maintenance of the proposed takeoff and landing area in Westboro, despite the FAA approving the drones as Air Carriers and Operators, these operations are commercial flights subject to state law. The department has not received any official notification or request for review from Amazon regarding the plans. The letter comes after residents of Westborough voted in support of a bylaw restricting the use of commercial drones, which still requires approval from the state attorney general and Aeronauts Division.
