What Germany’s schools taught a Globe reporter about education in America
In many of our problems, we're not alone. We're not alone in many of our attempted solutions, either. The Globe reporter recently spent two months reporting from Germany, learning about the differences in the American education system. He found that the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) published the results of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), one of the main global comparative tests, PISA. PISA evaluates older students than the main US national assessment, which has shown substantial declines in both reading and math from a peak around 2013. In math, American scores have long been below the average of the group of consistently-tested developed countries, but has fallen less over recent cycles. In reading, US scores had not begun falling until the latest test cycle, while German scores dropped from 2015 to 2022. The OECD also published a variety of comparative education statistics, including data from the 2024 Education at a Glance report.
