State may pay $10M to settle case over DCF's role in autistic teen's death

David Almond, 14, was found in October 2020 emaciated, bruised and unresponsive at his father’s Fall River home, an apartment that the Office of the Child Advocate said was in “deplorable condition.” The Massachusetts state government is considering paying $10 million to settle claims brought by Almond's estate and his two surviving triplet brothers over the Department of Children and Families' alleged role in his death. The case, which occurred six years after 14-year-old David Almond died of starvation and neglect, led to an "incredibly damning" report and significant changes at agencies serving children. Almond was found emaciated, bruised and unresponsive at his father's Fall River home in 2020. His brothers, John Almond and Jaclyn Coleman, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and will serve life in prison in 2023. If approved by the court, the settlement would establish lifelong special needs trusts for the surviving Almond brothers and create two funds in David Almonds' memory through the SouthCoast Community Foundation.
