Boston Children's Hospital Housing Strain for Traveling Families
Boston's medical housing is stretched thin as families travel farther for specialized care. Boston Children's Hospital has seen a significant increase in housing for families of patients at the hospital, due to long waitlists and non-profit housing options. The Yawkey Family Inn in Brookline, which opened in 2009, serves nearly 1,700 families a year. The hospital also offers a Patient Family Housing Program. Ronald McDonald House New England is planning to build a new flagship House to accommodate over 2,000 international families annually at no cost, saving families an estimated $2.7 million. For cancer patients, the American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge program offers lodging at 31 locations and 1,100 private rooms.
