Cambridge council should reject bids to target firms with ties to Israel
Imagine another minority community warning that municipal action would intensify hostility that its members already endure. Would the council proceed regardless? On Oct. 28, Cambridge City Council will consider two proposals to boycott and divest from companies associated with Israel. The proposals should be rejected, as the council's first duty is to protect its community. Jews have recounted hate crimes since Oct. 7, 2023, including vandalism of Jewish institutions and homes and harassment. They fear these proposals' sweeping accusations and punitive approach will exacerbate an already hostile environment. In 2025, Jews were targets of over 80 percent of religion-motivated hate crimes reported in Massachusetts, despite being a small minority of the state's population.
