At the surprisingly popular ‘fermentation club,’ you break bread over a bacterial buffet

Your neighbors are brewing rich and funky flavors in jars on their countertops. Many are willing to share. At the popular Somerville Fermentation Club, members gather to sample homemade fermented foods. The club, set up by Flora Spivak, 37, met at the Aeronaut brewery and plans to meet monthly. The group is an offshoot of the popular popular Somervervary Fermentation Festival, which attracted thousands of attendees. The risk of being harmed by these foods is low, with good bacteria winning and bad bacteria losing under the right conditions in a jar. However, Botulism, an illness caused by improperly fermented or canned food, can be seen, smelled, or tasted, although it is extremely rare. Many members believe that fermented foods can help with everything from preventing colon cancer to preventing eczema.
