Scratch and sniff? Mass. Lottery hopes scented scratch tickets will lift sagging sales

The $5 and $10 Candy Cane Cash Blowout tickets that became available Oct. 6 are their first ever scented holiday tickets. The Massachusetts Lottery is launching scented scratch tickets in an effort to boost its struggling sales. The $5 and $10 Candy Cane Cash Blowout tickets, which became available on Oct. 6, are the first ever scented holiday tickets. The product category has seen a decline in sales, with sales down 6% in fiscal year 2027 and 7.3% in September alone. Scratch tickets sales accounted for roughly 70% of all Lottery sales as recently as fiscal year 2021, but this has shrunk as the Lottery has increased emphasis on other games like Keno and introduced online "eInstant" games. So far this year, they represent 52% of sales, while eInstants have accounted for 18.5% of overall sales. Despite the drop in retail sales, the Lotter is running $11.8 million ahead of its profit pace at this point last budget year.
