Question 7 would allow Mass. "starter homes" on smaller lots
Massachusetts' housing crisis shows no signs of abating. Massachusetts voters will decide on whether to allow single-family homes on lots as small as 5,000 square feet to be built on smaller lots in an effort to address the state's housing crisis. The proposal would amend the state constitution to allow such homes if approved, provided they have access to public water and sewer services and at least 50 feet of street frontage. The measure would override local zoning rules requiring larger lots, certain special permits, or other requirements. If approved, it would take effect a month after the election. The campaign behind the measure, Legalize Starter Homes, argues that it could generate 2,200 to 7,500 new homes a year, while an independent analysis suggests 350 to 1,200 net new homes. However, there are concerns that the proposal could lead to gentrification and increased demand for more affordable starter homes in smaller lots.
