Visual Arts Review: A Museum That Won’t Act Its Age

At 90, Boston’s ICA revisits nine decades of boundary-pushing art, institutional reinvention, and a willingness to take risks. The Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston (IAC) is celebrating its 90th birthday by revisiting nine decades of boundary-pushing art, institutional reinvention, and a willingness to take risks. The ICA has hosted artists whose work questions assumptions about American art, culture, and society. The museum, which moved into its current Seaport location 20 years ago, has acquired 500 works of art over the past twenty years to establish itself as a leader in Boston’s contemporary art world and support living artists. Despite challenges, the museum has found its home in Seaports and is building a permanent collection. The first gallery is devoted to the geographic history of the museum, with a large map highlighting locations of the previous sites.
