State Police announce training academy reforms following 2024 death of recruit

The announcement comes days before the next State Police academy training program is set to begin. State Police has announced reforms to its academy training program, following the death of a recruit in 2024 due to head injuries sustained during training. The changes include concussion awareness instruction and more on-site medical experts. Former Middlesex County prosecutor Andrea Nardone has been appointed as the academy’s new civilian director of training. Other reforms include eliminating the title of “drill instructor” and creating a more supportive training environment led by 15 sworn agency personnel, creating a new framework to strengthen stress during training and expanding a collaboration with UMass Memorial Medical Group specialists to analyze recruit injuries and inform injury-prevention strategies. The reforms come after Trooper Enrique Delgado-Garcia died from critical injuries during a boxing exercise in 2024. Four academy instructors were charged criminally in connection with DelgadoGarcía's death.
