Father’s Day outlook: It could be a ‘Top 10 summer weekend’ after a stormy Friday

In a weather tribute to Dad, we’re looking at a stunner of a Saturday and Sunday with comfortable temps, low humidity. The third weekend of June is expected to be a standout event for the region, with temperatures expected to reach 90 degrees inland and in the 70s and 80s along the coast. High pressure will build into the region behind a cold front, bringing with it heavy thunderstorms with damaging wind gusts and possibly hail during the afternoon and evening. However, temperatures will fall toward 60 degrees by Saturday morning, with low temperatures typically starting at around 5 a.m. If traveling for Father’s Day weekend, be aware of the possibility of wet roads. High temperatures will be 72 to 77 degrees for much of the region this weekend, falling to the 60s after dark each evening. Water temperatures in the lakes region of Maine or New Hampshire are expected to remain cold.

The third weekend of June is going to turn out absolutely stellar in a month that has been over-performing with sunshine, comfortable temperatures and low humidity. It’s more of the same this weekend and the forecast for both Saturday and Sunday is nearly ideal. Dare I say it’s a Top 10 summer weekend?

High pressure will build into the region behind a cold front on Friday, bringing with it heavy thunderstorms with damaging wind gusts and possibly hail during the afternoon and evening. If your weekend is starting early, you can expect a bit of humidity with temperatures approaching 90 degrees inland and in the 70s and 80s along the coast. A few of the storms Friday evening could produce a heavy downpour and if you’re traveling for Father’s Day weekend, just be aware of the possibility of wet roads heading out of town at night.

After the frontal system moves out Friday night, temperatures will fall toward 60 degrees by Saturday morning. With the earliest sunrise of the year underway, low temperatures are at about 5 a.m. and by 7 a.m. we’re usually at least 5 degrees off those low temps. If you or Dad have a morning tee time this weekend, expect temperatures around 60 to 65 at 8 a.m. on Saturday and about 58 to 63 at that time on Sunday. Typically, when you see high temperatures predicted for a particular day, those readings are from 1:30 p.m. or so and last until about 4 p.m. Anytime after that, it starts to slowly cool down.

Highs this weekend will be 72 to 77 degrees for much of the region, falling to the 60s after dark each evening.

If you’re headed to the lakes region of Maine or New Hampshire, water temperatures are in the 60s to near 70 at most of the big lakes; some of the smaller lakes may be a little bit warmer depending on how far north or south you are. Ocean water is still running quite cold with readings in the 50s and 60s. I do expect some 70-degree readings to start showing up in a week or so in those sheltered coves of Southern New England.

Also “civil twilight” begins just after 4:30 in the morning and lasts until just before 9 p.m. each evening this weekend. This affords us plenty of opportunity to get outside and enjoy this fantastic weather that is ahead.

One final note as we get into the weather next week. I do expect some major heat to start building and arriving here in the middle of the week. Some maps show some chances of reaching 100 degrees next Thursday. The fact that there’s even a little probability this far out gets my attention. It’s not out of the question that some records will be reached and this is certainly something to watch, for sure. Maybe dad can check the air conditioners over the weekend between rounds of golf.

Southern New England: Sunshine abounds both Saturday and Sunday with low humidity and afternoon temperatures in the 70s.

Western Mass.: Some of the higher elevations of the Berkshires will stay in the 60s this weekend with 70s elsewhere with low humidity.

Cape Cod and Islands: Glorious June weather brings plenty of sunshine both days this weekend with pleasant temperatures in the lower to middle 70s.

Northern New England: Sunny skies will be abundant Saturday and Sunday with highs in the 60s to the north and in the mountains and 70s elsewhere.
