Two people have been arrested in association with the death of a 56-year-old Weymouth resident, which authorities are investigating as a homicide.

Christine Ruth Mello, 56, had “recently been reported missing,” Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrissey said, when her remains were found in her home at 34 Lake St. on Tuesday. Morrissey said that Weymouth Police and State Police detectives assigned to his office are investigating Mello’s death as a homicide.

On Thursday, police arrested two people based on their investigation, but neither are charged with violent crimes at this time. One is Mello’s housemate and the other is an “associate” of this housemate, according to the DA’s office.

John “Jack” Harper, of no fixed address, was arraigned at Quincy District Court Thursday afternoon on charges including larceny over $1,200; receiving a stolen motor vehicle, which authorities say is Mello’s; credit card misuse over $1,200 and forgery and uttering of a Registry of Motor Vehicles document. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The judge imposed a $50,000 cash bail and revoked Harper’s bail on three other matters in which the defendant was in default. He is due back in court on May 7.

Also arrested was Kelly Shaw, 44, Mello’s housemate. She was not arraigned on Thursday, but the DA’s office said she is expected to be arraigned on similar financial charges tomorrow morning.
