Muddy River Flood at 30: Boston's Green Line Disaster

Thirty years ago, a flood drowned the Green Line. Boston's river fix is still not finished. The Muddy River, which flooded Boston over two days in 1996, overflowed, sending floodwater into the Green Line and disrupting subway service for six days. The flooding caused an estimated $100 million in damage and resulted in the creation of the Emerald Necklace Conservancy. The flood triggered a federal overhaul of the Muddy river, costing more than $90 million. Since then, restoration work has included dredging, replacing undersized culverts, removing invasive vegetation, and improving landscaping along the banks. The next major project is the Charlesgate Park Improvement Project, expected to cost $180 million and finish in winter 2029. The conservancy's president, Karen Mauney-Brodek, described the flood as a serious wake-up call.
