This 155-year-old Dartmouth telescope is coming home to Greater Boston for restoration
Dartmouth College’s telescope is returning to Greater Boston, where it was originally made, to be taken apart piece by piece and restored. The Shattuck Observatory at Dartmouth College, a 155-year-old Clark refracting telescope, is being brought to Boston Science LLC in Waltham for restoration. The telescope, built in Cambridge in 1871, has been showing its age due to water damage and rust, and the dome is difficult to open. The restoration will include refurbishment and reconstruction, and updates including new flooring and waterproofing. The project is estimated to cost $250,000 and aims to be completed in time for the 50th year reunion at Dartmouth. Astronomer Doug Arion, who is funding the restoration, expressed his desire to make the observatory open to the public.
