Near Boston, a nurse and teacher say a $500,000 mortgage still won't buy a house

"Yeah we're just gonna stay at my parents' for awhile." A couple from near Boston, a registered nurse and teacher, and their partner, ages 31 and 35, have stated that despite selling a $360,000 condo in southern New Hampshire for $360k, they have been unable to secure a mortgage approval of around $500,000. The couple, who moved in with parents north of Boston after selling their condo, had $42,000 saved for housing and down payment expenses, and used some of this money to pay off debt and set aside $10,000 as an emergency fund. Despite these lower monthly costs, lenders would only approve them for about $500k. The frustration was shared with readers in different markets, with one commenter stating that cash buyers had beaten them on six homes in Rhode Island and another in South Jersey approved for just under $500K.
