Chelmsford Town Meeting bans large data centers

Large-scale data centers will now be prohibited in Chelmsford after Town Meeting overwhelmingly voted on a new bylaw addressing their use amid national scrutiny over the facilities and their impacts on the surrounding area. Chelmsford, Massachusetts, has approved a new bylaw bylaw that restricts the size and power draw of large-scale data centers in response to national scrutiny over their use. The new law, 118-6, imposes restrictions on data center facilities while still allowing for smaller data centers used by various businesses. The bylaw divides data centers into four categories: medium data center uses more than 3 MW of power, occupies up to 75,000 square feet of space, and has external infrastructure to store up to 15,000 gallons of fuel for generators. Small data centers are allowed in industrial zones with a special permit, and accessory small data centers will be allowed in commercial and industrial zones. However, some residents have questioned whether even small data centres are being regulated enough under the new bylaws.
