Food & Wine announced the winners of its Global Tastemakers Awards Tuesday, and Boston made the list as one of the best cities in the United States for bakeries.

Nearly 200 food and travel writers from across the globe voted on the awards across various categories and an expert judging panel ranked each category’s winners, according to a press release.

Food & Wine’s list consists of 11 U.S. cities — Boston, ranked fifth, was beat out by Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York City.

“It’s not news to anyone that you can find some of the best Portuguese breads and pastries on this side of the Atlantic in Boston, but the bakery scene is expanding to even further corners of the world,” wrote Food & Wine about Boston’s bakeries.

Michette, a French bakery in Somerville, earned a nod for their buckwheat chocolate chunk cookies and Basque cheesecake, while Solodko, a Ukrainian bakery in Brighton, received praise for their syrniki (farmer’s cheese pancakes).

Portland, Maine, a city where, according to Food & Wine, “residents take food seriously,” was the other New England city that made the list. Ranked sixth overall, Food & Wine said that Portland’s wealth of coffee shops contributes to its quality pastries. The magazine gave shout outs to Belleville, Onggi, and two bakeries recently nominated for James Beard Awards. ZU Bakery was named to the Outstanding Bakery list, while Atsuko Fujimoto of Norimoto Bakery was named to the Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker list.
