Commuter Rail fare gates launching Tuesday at South Station

Passengers will need to tap or scan their tickets or passes to exit and enter the track area at the busy transit hub, officials said. The MBTA and rail operator Keolis are launching Commuter Rail fare gates at South Station, one of the busiest travel hubs in the Northeast, as part of a strategy to reduce the practice of free lifts home to the suburbs on packed trains that limit conductors' ability to move from car to car. Passengers will need to tap or scan their tickets or passes to exit and enter the track area at the busy transit hub. The gates will be phased into operation at the station and will allow the T and Keolis to more consistently collect fares and ensure riders pay. Additional fare gates are also planned for the Back Bay and Ruggles stations in 2026.
