North Shore Teen's Death Looms Over MA Wrong-Way Driver Detection, Prevention Efforts

The Triton Regional senior was killed in a head-on, wrong-way crash on Route 1 in Revere early Sunday morning. MassDOT Undersecretary of Highway Administration Jonathan Gulliver announced that 90 statewide wrong-way detection systems have been installed in the past few months, with 40 more currently under construction and expected to be operational by the end of the year. By 2027, he plans for 300 detection systems, which alert potential wrong-ways drivers with flashing lights and immediately notify MassDOT and State Police of a wrong-Way driver, with a system upgrade planned to send alerts directly to the driver through GPS systems. Gullivers acknowledged that there is still a lot of work to be done, following a recent fatal crash involving a 17-year-old driver on the North Shore. It is unclear whether this increase in awareness of wrong-driving is due to better detection or an increase in distracted driving.
