MIT facilities workers authorize a strike, the second union to do so in a week
About 600 MIT facility workers and more than 3,000 graduate student workers could walk off the job anytime in the coming days. The 32BJ SEIU union of MIT facilities workers has voted to authorize a strike, the second union to do so in a week, asking for a living wage increase, reduction in healthcare premiums, and resources and protections for immigrant workers. The union represents about 600 workers who have worked without a contract since July. The strike comes after the Graduate Student Union approved a walkout following six months of failed negotiations. The walkout could disrupt MIT's operations as facilities workers and thousands of graduate students could walk off their jobs in the coming days. The unions are also pushing for more protections for their immigrant workers and for a fund established to provide low-cost assistance for legal resources and professional training. The university's endowment grew more than 10 percent last year, to $29.2 billion.
