The man was arrested on charges related to improper storage of a firearm, possession of explosives, fireworks, and possession of firearms without an FID card.

A 61-year-old Mansfield man has been arrested for possessing nearly two dozen illegal firearms, more than 10,000 rounds of ammunition, high-capacity feeding devices and items used for making improvised explosives.

The individual, whose identity authorities are withholding pending arraignment, had two default warrants out of Attleboro for crimes committed in Mansfield and Norton when the Mansfield Police Department executed an arrest warrant on Wednesday.

In a release Thursday night, Mansfield Police said probable cause was developed that there were a “number of illegal firearms” at a home at 142 Church St., in the center of town and near the town’s four elementary schools.

Detectives applied for and gained a search warrant before recovering 23 illegal firearms, some of them large-capacity, explosives and fireworks along with 10,000 rounds of ammunition and high-capacity feeding devices.

The man was arrested on charges of improper storage of a firearm, improper storage of a large-capacity firearm, possession of explosives, possession of fireworks, possession of a large-capacity firearm and possession of a firearm without an FID card.

A large police presence was seen outside the home Wednesday and Thursday. The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the State Police Bomb Squad, Detectives applied for and gained a second search warrant for the home on Thursday.

“After speaking with neighbors and containing the scene, a thorough search of the grounds of the property was conducted with help from State and Federal partners,” Mansfield Police said in the release.

The man is being held on the default warrants and will be arraigned in Attleboro District Court.
