Two vehicles caught on fire Monday morning on Interstate 93 — one near Medford and another at the entrance to the O’Neill Tunnel — causing delays during the morning rush-hour commute, officials said. Around 7 a.m., a vehicle caught fire heading south at Exit 21 on I-93 in Medford, according to a Massachusetts Department of Transportation post on X, formerly Twitter. The two right lanes were closed, and the post said to “expect delays.”

Just four minutes later, MassDOT posted that another vehicle was on fire, this time in Boston at the entrance of the O’Neill Tunnel. The two right lanes were closed and travelers should “expect delays,” the post said. The vehicle fire in Medford was cleared around 7:30 a.m., but MassDOT said to “expect residual delays” in the morning commute, according to another post. About an hour later, at 8:30 a.m., the vehicle fire at the O’Neill Tunnel was put out and all lanes were reopened, according to a follow-up MassDOT post. State police and MassDOT were not immediately available for comment on the situation. There was no information on the cause of the fires or the length of delays.
