Excavating an epic excavation
The ancient city of Antioch is the subject of a new show at the Davis Museum A new exhibition at Wellesley College's Davis Museum, titled "Excavating Antioch: The Archaeology of an Ancient City," focuses on the 1930s excavation of the Roman Empire, where the name “Christian” was first used for a follower of Jesus. The Louvre and several US institutions formed the Committee for the Excavation of Antioch-on-the-Orontes and Its Vicinity. The original US members were Princeton University, the Worcester Art Museum, and Baltimore Museum of Art, before they were joined by Harvard’s Fogg Museum and Dumbarton Oaks. Among the 140 or so items in “Excavated Antioch” are loans from all six institutions. The show also includes recovered artifacts such as sculptures, architectural fragments, games, keys, tools, weights, and hairpins.
