Boston Dynamics Employees Protest Against ICE Plan to Buy Robot Dogs For Observations, Inspections
Boston Dynamics employees are petitioning against ICE’s plans to purchase robot dogs for their observations and inspections against immigrants. Boston Dynamics, a robotics company known for building some of the world's most capable and versatile machines, is under fire from its own workforce over a $1.3 million contract with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) purchase of four Spot robots and associated technology. Dozens of employees have signed a petition urging the company to cancel the sale of its Spot robot dogs to ICE, arguing that the sale damages the company's public image and presents us as working directly with the agency. The petition was sent to company leadership in early 2026, and arrived shortly after a $2.3m contract with ICE was finalized. The contract was awarded to ICE's Homeland Security Investigations unit, which is the agency's investigative and intelligence arm rather than its deportation-focused Enforcement and Removal Operations division. Boston Dynamics has defended its decision to proceed with the contract, arguing the sale is to HSI, which focuses on transnational criminal matters rather than removal operations.
