Here’s what to know about tonight’s Hunter’s Moon
With clear skies forecast across New England, this celestial treat combined with the lingering Orionid meteor showers should offer some spectacular views. The Hunter's Moon, traditionally known as the Hunter's Night, is set to occur on Sunday, when the full moon reaches peak illumination at 12:11 a.m. EST. This coincides with the Orionid meteor showers, which peaked last week due to cloudy skies. The best viewing will occur at sunset in the Boston area. The next two full moons, the Beaver Moon and the Cold Moon, will also offer an added special treat as back-to-back supermoons, when a full moon is at or near its closest approach to Earth, called perigee. According to NASA, a supermoon can appear about 30 percent brighter and up to 14 percent larger than the faintest moon of the year.
