The internet promises forever. I’m not buying it.
WordPress promises a century of website hosting. But the history of books and digital preservation reveals just how elusive permanence can be. Blogger Stewart Brand, founder of the Whole Earth Catalog and woolgatherer extraordinaire, has announced that WordPress is offering a $38,000 service called LOCKSS, which stores all of its data in at least three mirrored data centers to ensure it remains accessible in the future. The service includes LOCKESS technology that stores all data in multiple mirrored data centres. However, critics have questioned whether this claim of digital immortality will hold up with time and scrutiny. For example, Shira Peltzman, associate director of digital preservation strategy at Yale’s Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, suggested that digital preservation is less stable than storing physical books and manuscripts. She also noted that digital collections represent a constantly shifting window of technology due to the constantly shifting nature of technology. The Library of America's president, Max Rudin, admitted in an interview that the claim of the longevity of these books may be tempting.
