New Hampshire’s government isn’t perfect, but it’s getting the job done
A state representative reflects on how cooperation between Republicans and Democrats generates real results. New Hampshire's Republican-led House, under a Republican governor, has been working hard to get things done, despite a contentious election season. The state legislature, which includes 400 members and districts, is known as a citizen legislature. One bill signed by Governor Kelly Ayotte raises tax credits for veterans, combat veterans, and surviving spouses, while others strengthen protections for domestic violence victims, and free physician associates from non-compete agreements. These bills passed without party lines, requiring different parties to agree on the issue first and then argue for a solution. The citizen legislature, who earn $100 a year, takes responsibility to balance their budget and answer to constituents. The work of this state House is seen as a model for democracy.

But underneath the campaign noise, there’s another kind of government working just up the road in Concord. It isn’t perfect, but it’s proof that people who disagree can still get things done.
